프랜시스 글레스너 리(Frances Glessner Lee, 1878–1962)는 The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death라는 섬뜩한 디오라마 시리즈를 제작했습니다. 이 미니어처들은 단순한 모형을 넘어, 수사관들에게 현장을 조사하는 방법을 교육하고 동시에 편견을 흔드는 혁신적인 도구였습니다. 리는 “캡틴 리”라 불리길 좋아했으며, 자신의 영리함과 장인정신으로 유리천장을 깨고 목소리를 내지 못했던 사람들을 대신해 싸웠습니다. 그녀의 작품은 법의학 교육의 선구적 도구로 자리 잡으며, 그 결단력을 증명합니다.
Frances Glessner Lee (1878–1962) created a series of grisly dioramas, The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. These miniatures provided an ingenious solution to a problem voiced years earlier: they taught investigators how to properly canvass a scene while also challenging their biases. As pioneering tools for forensic education, the dioramas testify to Captain Lee’s determination and craft, breaking barriers in a male-dominated field and advocating for those without a voice.
The Nutshell Study는 연극 무대부터 범죄 현장까지, 내러티브 공간을 분석하는 사람들을 위해 디자인된 iPad 앱입니다. 원래 법의학 훈련용으로 제작된 글레스너 리의 디오라마에서 영감을 받아, 사용자는 오브제와 서사의 복잡한 관계를 탐구할 수 있습니다. 서로 다른 디오라마 간, 혹은 한 장면 안에서 증거를 비교·대조하며 사건의 숨겨진 진실과 리의 의도를 파악할 수 있도록 돕습니다. 이 앱은 디자인·스토리텔링·수사의 교차점을 탐구할 수 있는 독창적인 도구입니다.
The Nutshell Study is a mobile iPad application designed for analyzing narrative spaces, from theatrical sets to crime scenes. Inspired by Lee’s forensic dioramas, the app lets users explore the relationships between props, characters, and narratives. By comparing evidence across different dioramas—or within a single one—users can uncover both Glessner’s intentions and the hidden truths behind each scene. The app offers a unique tool for studying the interplay between design, storytelling, and investigation.
